This is a graphic depiction of a mitochondria which are found in great numbers in every cell. These little organelles provide cellular energy to each cell by converting foodstuffs into energy (adenosine triphosphate, commonly known as ATP).  This cellular energy called ATP is needed for every cell to do its job. Diabetic people do not produce as much ATP from carbohydrates and thus are relegated to abnormally high lipid and free fatty acid uses, including triglycerides (another form of fat). 

The mitochondria of diabetic people are not deficient, they are merely not receiving the signals and enzymes necessary to allow them to properly burn carbohydrates. The Beauty of the Artificial Pancreas Treatment is that it merely supplies what every mitochondria needs in order to burn carbohydrates. 

The good news is that mitochondria have their own DNA, and so once they are provided the necessary signals and enzymes, they can provide cellular energy to their host cell.  Then, when the cells have the energy they need from carbohydrates they quickly begin to heal themselves by their own very natural processes. This is the beauty of the Artificial Pancreas Treatment, it merely mimics what a normal pancreas does by way of stimulating the liver!
