Good vs. Bad Carbohydrates, it is the glycemic index.

With a strong link being developed between heart disease and women who eat high glycemic index foods, a new surge in the Mediterranean diet has emerged.

The answer seems to be broadening the types of bread and cereals to include granary, rye and oats. A good helping of fruits and vegetables seems to be more and more important.

Bad carbohydrates are typically high glucose and glycemic index foods. White bread refined sugar, sugar sweetened drinks and candies are apparently more damaging to women than men. Not included in the studies are some of the other obvious players in metabolism.

Since these studies most recently have come from Italy, wine and lifestyle may not directly correlate to the lifestyle found in the USA.

No matter what the studies show, the body of evidence against high glycemic foods is strong enough to take a stand that we should just reduce our intake whenever and wherever possible.
